First separate a surface mark from damaged board

A shallow dent or small hole in otherwise sound drywall is different from a broken opening with loose edges, damage that extends beyond the visible spot, or a place that has been wet. USG describes patch products for minor holes and cracks, while its repair guidance treats larger openings and water-damaged areas separately.

Why size alone is not the full answer

A repair may need backing or replacement board, joint tape and compound, or a finish that blends with the surrounding texture. The manufacturer’s guidance for a specific repair product applies only to that product and the conditions it covers. Old moisture, recurring cracks, a soft surface, or damage close to an edge can change the decision; covering a symptom without understanding the cause can leave the underlying issue unresolved.

Describe the area before choosing a repair

Note the approximate width and height, whether the edges are firm or broken, whether the surface is painted or textured, and any known leak or repeat damage. Avoid cutting into an area when wiring, plumbing, or the cause of moisture is uncertain. For photos and details that help describe a request, see the drywall photo and estimate guide.
